"Dancing with Mr Darcy: A Jane Austen Evening with the TTU Vernacular Music Center"

Friday, April 8, 2011, 7:00pm

Dancing with Mr Darcy On Friday April 8 2010, at 7:00pm, the Vernacular Music Center, the College of Visual and Performing Arts, and the Caprock Celtic Association present "Dancing with Mr Darcy: A Jane Austen Evening with the TTU Vernacular Music Center." The event will include demonstration English Country Dancing in the fashion of the Brontes and Jane Austen, live music by the TTU Celtic Ensemble, period costume, light snacks and hors d'ouvres, accessible instruction in dancing and deportment, and a midnight coffee service.

As the novels of Charlotte and Emily Bronte and Jane Austen make clear, in 19th century England, dancing was both a social and political activity: not only entertainment but a very important social ritual between genders and classes. In the classic film realizations by the BBC of Jane Eyre and Pride and Prejudice, the elegant and refined, yet accessible, figures of English Country Dancing are often the focus of plot twists, turns, and symbolism. In this ticketed event, which raises funds for the Vernacular Music Center concert series, participants may dance and dine; sip punch and tea; and watch, learn, and enjoy the dancing. TTU staff, dancers, and musicians will provide friendly instruction as well.

Period or formal costume is requested, and a professional photographer will be present to take formal portraits.

Guests are encouraged to bring a favorite tea-cup for the 12:00 midnight coffee service.

Information is available to guests in advance on costume, dancing, music, websites and videos from the BBC, and related matters; visit

"Dancing with Mr Darcy" is a unique and popular event and advance ticket purchase is necessary. Price includes admission, dancing, instruction, food, and coffee service.
